A CNN analyst was left red-faced after she accused a black Fox Nation host of demonstrating ‘white privilege’ in a debate the pair had about jobs and race.
Areva Martin said David Webb’s views on race – he insisted his colour had nothing to do with whether or not he got a job – was indicative of "white privilege".
I’ve chosen to cross different parts of the media world, done the work so that I’m qualified to be in each one. I never considered my colour the issue, I considered my qualifications the issue.
"How do I have the privilege of white privilege?" Webb asked, incredulous.
Martin responded, "David, by virtue of being a white male you have white privilege."
The host of Fox Nation's Reality Check then explained that he was actually black.
Areva, I hate to break it to you, but you should’ve been better prepped. I’m black.
Awkward.
Webb called the assumption "insulting" and berated her staff for not prepping her properly.
"You see, you went to white privilege; this is the falsehood in this," he fumed.
You went immediately with an assumption. Your people, obviously, or you didn’t look.
You’re talking to a black man... who started out in rock radio in Boston, who crossed the paths into hip-hop, rebuilding one of the greatest black stations in America and went on to work at Fox News, where I’m told apparently blacks aren’t supposed to work, but yet, you come with this assumption, and you go to white privilege.
That’s actually insulting.
To her credit, Martin was apologetic.
I stand corrected. It is [insulting] and I apologise.
I was given wrong information.
The anti-immigration, pro-Donald Trump pundit, who is also a contributor for far-right website Breitbart News, took the whole situation lightly, and later posted on Twitter:
