New data by Yougov found that one in five Londoners are not cockney slang-literate.
They asked 1,083 people living in London the meaning of ten classic rhyming slang terms (from the Cockney Rhyming Slang website) and found that 22 per cent of Londoners couldn’t correctly interpret them.
Rhyming slang is a remnant of the East End, and its decline may be attributed to the generational gap between young Londoners and older residents.
Participants over the age of 50 tended to do better, averaging six out of 10 whereas those aged between 18 and 24 averaged at 3 out of 10.
