David Icke lends some much needed credibility to indyref conspiracists

Those who believe the Scottish independence referendum was rigged have a new high-profile supporter: conspiracy theorist David Icke.

Icke, who believes that a sinister group of lizards called the Babylonian Brotherhood rule the world, has posted a series of links on his website noting Russian election observers believe the referendum was fixed and linking to reports questioning whether the vote was rigged against the nationalists.

Scotland rejected independence and chose to continue its 307-year-old union by a clear margin on Thursday, with 45 per cent saying yes compared to 55 per cent choosing to stay in the UK.

After the verdict SNP leader Alex Salmond acknowledged defeat and called on nationalists to do the same, saying: "I accept the verdict of the people and call on all of Scotland to follow suit."

However, several SNP supporters have voiced concerns that the referendum was rigged. Yes Dundee have had to tweet a rebuff to claims on social media that 'Yes' votes had been put in 'No' piles.

More than 81,000 people have signed a Change.org petition demanding a recount of votes by impartial international parties.
