Donald Trump Jr is in hot water after a previously undisclosed meeting with a lawyer connected to the Kremlin in 2016 has come to light.

The New York Times reported Monday that Mr Trump Jr allegedly received an email with information promising compromising information on Hillary Clinton and her campaign. He was also allegedly informed in the email that the material was part of a Russian government effort to put Trump in the White House.

The email was sent by publicist Rob Goldstone, who reportedly helped broker the meeting between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer.

Mr Trump conceded the meeting had indeed taken place, but said that he had met with the lawyer at the request of a friend.

In a statement he said:

After pleasantries were exchanged the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms. Clinton. Her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. No details or supporting information was provided or even offered. It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information.

Then the statement gets even more interesting.

She then changed subjects and began discussing the adoption of Russian children and mentioned the Magnitsky Act. It became clear to me that this was the true agenda all along and that the claims of potentially helpful information were a pretext for the meeting.

The phrase "claims of potentially helpful information were a pretext for the meeting" are rather eye-opening.

Tweeting an apparent response to the Times' revelations, Trump Jr responded by saying.

Despite the gravity of the situation and the mounting concerns over alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and a foreign power, the internet still found time to see the funny side of things.

Many references to emails were made, particularly after the furore over Hillary Clinton's private email server during the 2016 campaign.

What the next few days will bring is anyone's guess, however, Kellyanne Conway has been reassuring the American public on the morning shows saying:

People’s disclosure statements have been amended to reflect meetings such as this. And Don Jr. came forth this weekend and gave more information about the meeting. He also made very clear that no information that was meaningful and helpful was gained from this.

So that's fine.
