Nearly three quarters of Americans want to see Trump's tax returns

Almost three quarters of Americans think Donald Trump should release his tax returns, a new ABC News and Washington Post poll has found.

President-elect Trump has so far refused the release of his tax returns.

He told reporters at a press conference last week:

The only ones that care about my tax returns are the reporters.

You learn very little from a tax return.

Four in ten of those polled said they cared "a lot" about the release of his tax returns.

49 per cent of his own supporters said he should release his returns, and 94 per cent of Clinton supporters agreed.

During the election debates Donald Trump admitted he had taken advantage of a tax loophole, using a loss of $1 billion in 1995 to avoid federal income tax for two decades.

He responded to Hillary Clinton's remarks about his practice:

That makes me smart.

The survey was carried out by land line and mobile telephones between 12 and 15 January, among a random national sample of 1,005 people.
