Donald Trump has found himself at the receiving end of a scathing attack by one of America's most famous right-wing commentators.

Glenn Beck, a television and radio host who left the GOP in 2015 because it "wasn't conservative enough", has never held back in airing his views on the Republican presidential candidate.

But in what is arguably his fiercest critique yet, he said he thinks the GOP nominee is a sociopath.

"Have you seen him during the last year and a half truly feel sorry for someone that couldn't help him," he said on Charlie Rose.

Truly connect on a human level and say, 'This has made me stop. This has made me think. You know, I'm deeply sorry for what I have said'?

"Frightening," he added.

Beck has been one of the most high profile figures in the conservative anti-Trump movement, at one point going so far as to tell Vicethat he considered voting for Hillary Clinton, but "couldn't do it".

"I think Donald Trump is so unstable - so dangerous - that it has crossed my mind," he said.

Republican leaders have been denouncing Trump as a serious GOP candidate since he announced he would run in the 2016 presidential election.

A report in the New York Timesearlier this month reported that more than 160 Republican leaders have withdrawn endorsement of him or called for him to step down as nominee.

At least 35 said they would vote for Hillary Clinton instead.
