G20 summit: 'Family photo' of world leaders features just two women

The 'family photo' of the various world leaders at the G20 summit has become a tradition at the event since 2008.

This year's photo, though, presented the world with an unfortunate fact, in that it featured the fewest female heads-of-government ever.

British prime minister Theresa May was the only female leader in the picture, with International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde being the only other woman pictured.

German chancellor Angela Merkel would have been in the picture but complications with her flight to Argentina meant that she wasn't present at the time the photo was taken.

Yet even with her in the picture, it would still only amounted to three women, which would have been the lowest number since 2010.

Incidentally, the highest number of women ever featured in the picture is just five, which occurred in both 2012 and 2013, which isn't exactly something the cheer about.

Since the photo was published people have been sharing it on social media and pointing out how disappointing that in 2018 there are still so few women involved at the head of politics in their respective countries.

With Angela Merkel due to step down as chancellor in 2021 and Theresa May's position at the head of the British government looking more and more precarious by the day thanks to Brexit, the future of women at the G20 currently looks very bleak.
