This chart reveals the real problem with season 8 of Game of Thrones

As Game of Thrones comes to a close after eight seasons, the ending was a mixed bag for fans - and a new chart attempts to explain why.

A petition asking for a do-over reached almost two million signatures, and social media threads, websites and blogs dedicated to discussing alternative endings have cropped up across the internet.

Viewers cited issues with characterisation, with pacing and even with the writing.

Vanity Fair writer Joanna Robinson shared a table created by github user mrquart. Using information from opensubtitles.org on the number of words in the script each from season one to eight, they created a chart to show, quite clearly, the problem.

Starting from season one, there has been a steep decline of the number of words per minute for each episode in each subsequent season.

Basically, in comparison to season one, season eight had very few words.

For many fans, this was their "aha" moment

It was also noted that the final season had the lowest percentage of female dialogue in the series' history
