The suspected gunman in the mass shooting at a music festival in Las Vegas, which killed at least 50 and injured more than 200, has been named as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock.

It's the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, as the death toll surpassed the 49 killed in the nightclub Pulse in Orlando in June 2016.

Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said at a press conference:

We are looking at in excess of 50 individuals dead and over 200 individuals injured.

Obviously this is a tragic incident and one that we have never experienced in this valley.

My condolences go out to the loved ones.

Mobile phone footage showed strangers tending to people with gunshot wounds in the street, moments after the attack.

They were seen to be using festival barriers to carry the wounded as makeshift stretchers, and asking people with vehicles to help carry wounded to the hospital.

The victims were shot with a high-powered assault rifle, thought to have been fired from a hotel floor above the concert.

The Las Vegas Met Police Department has tweeted a number for families to call to help locate missing loved ones, 1-866-535-5654.
