Leonardo DiCaprio has long used his status and influence to raise awareness surrounding the dangers of climate change.

He founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, and stars in new documentary Before the Flood, which will see the actor travelling across five continents to speak to experts on climate change solutions.

As part of this effort, he attended the Yale Climate Conference earlier this week, to talk with former Secretary of State John Kerry in front of a crowd of more than 2,000.

It was here he told everyone about the moment he met Donald Trump, whose view on climate change, it’s safe to say, probably doesn’t align with DiCaprio’s.

After all, Trump is the man who once tweeted:

The pair met in December last year, when the actor visited Trump to talk to him about the job creation of clean energy.

According to the Hartford Courant, DiCaprio told the audience:

We presented him with a comprehensive plan to tackle climate change, while also simultaneously harnessing the economic potential of green jobs.

We talked about how the United States has the potential to lead the world in clean-energy manufacturing and research and development.

In fact, with the commitment of the Paris climate agreement, it could be the largest domestic opportunity in all of American history. All we need is the political will to see it happen.

He added that the US still has "the potential to lead the world on this issue...We can only hope that the President begins to see it too, before it is too late”.

DiCaprio added the meeting was to no avail, since Trump went on to pull the US out of the Paris agreement on greenhouse gas emissions in June this year.

He said:

We should not have people in office who do not believe in facts and truths and modern science that are able to manipulate and risk the entire future of this entire generation.

We are at that turning point right now, and we are going to look back at this point in history, and frankly this administration, and certain people are going to be vilified for not taking action. They really are. And it's up to this generation, it's up to all of you to get involved and make a difference.
