Manchester City and England footballer Raheem Sterling has claimed that British newspapers helping 'helping fuel' racism amongst followers of the sport.

In an Instagram post, the 24-year-old star addressed the negative portrayal of young black English footballers in the media compared to young white players.

The lengthy post highlighted two similar stories about his teammates Phil Foden and Tosin Adarabioyo, where the wording appears to be more in favour of one than the other.

Sterling's comments come after he appeared to be the subject of racist abuse from a Chelsea fan during his side's 2-0 loss to the west London team on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred when Sterling went to collect the ball on the sidelines at Stamford Bridge. The Metropolitan Police has stated that they are "aware of a video circulating online in which it is claimed racial abuse was allegedly directed at a player".

Kick It Out, the organisation which campaigns for equality in football, supported Sterling's statement.

Elsewhere, footballers and journalists have also praised Sterling.

This thread dating back to May from Adam Keyworth which highlights the various headlines that Sterling is referring to has also begun to be shared again.

Despite showing support for Sterling after the incident on Saturday, Piers Morgan has since questioned the player's statement about the media, leading to a debate between him and Henry Winter of The Times.
