From Trump to Kimberly Guilfoyle: 29 of the most ridiculous and scary quotes from the RNC

From Trump to Kimberly Guilfoyle: 29 of the most ridiculous and scary quotes from the RNC

Four days doesn't seem like a long time but when it's the Republican National Convention during Donald Trump's presidency, it can seem like a lifetime and a long, torturous lifetime at that.

The Trump administration's first convention in the White House (parts of it literally took place in the White House) was a sight to behold and not the kinda sight that you would want to show your children.

Most the convention was spent spreading fake news about the Democrats and criticising Joe Biden and Kamala Harris but they still couldn't bring themselves to tell the truth even when they were trying to promote some of the good things that Trump has done in the past four years.

Everything from transphobia to anti-abortion rhetoric was touched upon during the convention and barely a stone was left unturned (even the owner of a professional fighting league made a speech). They shocking managed to get American history completely wrong on more than one occasion.

It was the kind of event that would make most Americans ashamed to be from the United States but judging by the last five years it's really hard to determine where people's heads are at and what they support. We'll find out in November but if this week has been anything to go by, we'd be in for another brutal four years if Trump wins again.

On that note, here are some of the most outrageous quotes from the 2020 Republican National Convention.

Day One:

Kimberly Guilfoyle went full supervillain

Easily the strangest moment of the entire RNC, which is really saying something, was when Donald Trump Jr's girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle did her best impression of Rita Repulsa from Power Rangersand bellowed into the void. Literally standing in an empty room, Guilfoyle began shouting and literally screamed "THE BEST IS YET TO COME."

Donald Trump Jr compared Joe Biden to the Loch Ness Monster

In what will probably go down as the single strangest comparison ever, Donald Trump Jr thought he was making a great gag when he said that Joe Biden was like the Loch Ness Monster when he said:

Biden has promised to take that money back out of your pocket and keep it in the swamp. That makes sense though, considering Joe Biden is basically the Loch Ness Monster of the swamp.

As it was pointed out, this literally makes no sense at all.

Mark and Patricia McCloskey are worried that the Democrats are going to 'abolish the Suburbs'

Mark and Patricia McCloskey are the couple who were ridiculed after they pointed guns at Black Lives Matter protesters in St Louis, Missouri.

By the way, this is what their house looks like.

David Bossie champions Maryland's "greatest segregationists"

In perhaps the worst slip of the tongue possible, the chair of Maryland's delegation to the Republican National Convention, David Bossie attempted to say that his state was home to two of America's greatest abolinists Frederick Douglas and Harriett Tubman but somehow got this very wrong and managed to call them 'segregationists' instead.

Ross Little Jr thinks Joe Biden is "hiding in the dark, waiting to take the lives of our unborn babies"

Ross Little Jr is a national committeeman for Louisiana at the RNC. He's not hugely significant (he doesn't even have a Wikipedia page) but this short speech was one of the first things that anyone would have heard at the RNC, getting things off to a terrifying start.

Trump praises Tennessee's 'beautiful war fields'

For a guy who seems very reluctant to get the United States into another war, despite his best efforts, Trump sure does love glamourising old wars.

Day Two:

Larry Kudlow thinks that Trump has successfully fought the coronavirus

Larry Kudlow here, the Director of the United States National Economic Council, painting a completely fictional version of the last six months.

Cissie Graham Lynch pushes anti-Trans rhetoric

It won't surprise you to learn that there was the odd bit of Transphobia at the RNC. Here is Cissie Graham Lynch, granddaughter of the late Rev. Billy Graham misgendering people and moaning about them using the changing room of their gender and competing against people from their gender.

Pam Bondi pushes a conspiracy theory about Joe Biden

The former Florida attorney general spoke on Tuesday, a pushed a conspiracy theory about Biden's involvement with a gas company in Ukraine, a baseless theory that was virtually the same thing that Trump got impeached for.

Abby Johnson said that she 'knows what abortion smells like'

Johnson used to be the director of Planned Parenthood but has since done a complete 180 and has now aligned herself with Republican's and is a pro-life activist. At the RNC she raised several eyebrows by admitting that she knew what an 'abortion smelt like'.

Tiffany Trump thinks everyone is a Trump supporter

In a rare public appearance, Tiffany Trump, the youngest of the president's daughters spoke at the convention, showering her father in praise. By her approximation, everyone who believes in freedom of thought, anyone who is against inequality and is accepting of all faiths is a Trump supporter. She said this without even a hint of irony.

Trump makes an entrance straight out of the Putin playbook

Trump's entrance on night two was eerily familiar with another controversial world leader as he was serenaded by horns and flanked by members of the military but we can't quite put our finger on it. Oh yeah...

Also, those guards that opened the doors for him, were probably in violation of the Department of Defence directive 1344.10.

Everything Eric Trump said

Of the numerous qualities that Eric Trump possess delivering an accurate public speech devoid of falsities is not one of them. Throughout his speech on Tuesday, Trump said a string of inaccurate statements about Joe Biden and his father's achievements, many of which have never happened. Here's MSNBC's Rachel Maddow fact-checking just a few of those claims.

Mike Pompeo might have broken the law

On Tuesday, Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, gave a speech at the RNC, from Jerusalem, Israel where he was on an official visit. Immediately Pompeo was hit with accusations that he had broken federal law as there are state department rules which mark a clear line between domestic politics and international diplomacy. Rep Joaquin Castro, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, gave a statement shortly after Pompeo's speech announcing that he would be launching an investigation as to whether the Trump aide had broken the law.

It is highly unusual, and likely unprecedented, for a sitting secretary of state to speak at a partisan convention for either of the political parties. It appears that it may also be illegal. In furtherance of the constitutionally mandated obligation to conduct oversight of the State Department, as well as to determine whether and legislative action is necessary, to address this matter, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations intends to examine this issue carefully.

Melania Trump appears to live in a different reality

In a controversial speech from the White House rose garden, which she had just redesigned, Melania said several statements that could be best interpreted as delusional. From claiming that a vote for her husband will allow women's voices to be heard to it being a privilege to live in the US as a migrant, much of what the First Lady said was utterly tone-deaf.

Day Three:

Kristi Noem derides experts

Mercifully, day three at the RNC wasn't that eventful but things did get off of to a promising start when the governor of South Dakota did her best Michael Gove impression.

Senator Marsha Blackburn compares the Democrats coronavirus lockdown to 'communist China'

Sorry, what?

Republican candidate gets US history completely wrong

Madison Cawthorn, a Republican candidate from North Carolina, who bragged on social media about visiting Hitler's holiday retreat, claimed that his personal favourite moment in US history was when 25-year-old James Madison signed the Declaration of Independence. Madison did not sign the Declaration of Independence.

The Democrats want to ban animal agriculture and all gas-powered cars

More false statements about Democrats policies, this time from Joni Ernst, a Republican candidate from Iowa.

Lara Trump misquotes Abraham Lincoln

As the first ever Republican president, you would think that Trump and his cohorts would know Abraham Lincoln's many famous quotes off by heart but apparently they don't. During her speech on Wednesday, Lara Trump, the wife of Eric Trump, tried to quote Lincoln but didn't just manage to misquote him, she said something that he had never uttered.

Abraham Lincoln once famously said: ‘America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.'

It has since been pointed out that this quote comes from a meme that falsely credits Lincoln as saying it.

Obama and Biden were accused of launching a secret surveillance campaign on Trump

More Obamagate nonsense, this time from the former acting director of National Intelligence, Richard Grenell.

Mike 'Charisma' Pence said some words

In a typical rocket-fueled speech from the vice president, Mike Pence spoke to a small crowd in Baltimore and said numerous inaccuracies such as claiming that the Trump administration introduced Veterans Choice (it was actually Obama in 2014) and mocking Biden for claiming that a miracle will not fix coronavirus. Perhaps the cherry on top of this exuberant speech was when he inadvertently highlighted just how unsafe Trump's America is.

Day Four:

This election is not about government

How would the Republicans end their four-day festival of horrors? Well, the start of their last day saw Kevin McCarthy claim that Biden and Harris have got it wrong and that the election isn't about government at all.

Mitch McConnell claims that Democrats are going to stop Americans eating hamburgers

The Senate's majority republican leader Mitch McConnell here, boldly claiming that Democrats will tell people what sort of car to drive, how many burgers they can eat and what sources of information are credible.

The owner of Ultimate Fighting Championship said that Trump had delivered on every promise

We wish we were making this up.

Ben Carson champions Trump receiving an award from Jesse Jackson

To try and claim that Trump isn't a racist, Housing and Urban Development secretary Ben Carson highlighted an award Trump received from Rev. Jesse Jackson in 1999 on the future president's commitment to diversity.

This came on the same day that Jackson said that "we have a moral desert at the top" in response to the killing of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Republicans really wanted to highlight just how bad things are in America under Trump

Here is Patrick Lynch, president of the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York and Rudy Giuliani really laying into Trump and the state of US cities.

Ivanka said the results speak for themselves

The last of Trump's adult children to speak at the RNC was his favourite, Ivanka who said that her father's "results speak for themselves." Wonder which results those are?

The Big Dog speaks

Of course, the pièce de resistance of the RNC was Trump accepting their nomination for the presidency and giving a speech for the ages. He did give a speech for the ages, one that lasted ages more like. The president spoke for an epic 70 minutes and was so exciting that he probably cured insomnia. As well as managing to mess up a word like 'while' and claiming that he has done more for the African American community than any president since Abraham Lincoln, Trump claimed that his administration has pioneered the 'fatality rate'.

Trump's speech was so inaccurate and laced with lies, Rachel Maddow spent more than two minutes fact-checking him as fireworks went off in the Washington skyline.

Here is another set of fact-checked and debunked from the RNC put together by The Independent.

So that's another RNC in the history books and it's unlikely that we'll be forgetting it any time soon. Whether Trump and his friends will be around for the 2024 edition remains to be seen but surely it cannot be worse than this?
