Ruth Davidson, the openly gay leader of the Scottish Conservatives, had the perfect snub to her party going into coalition with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

The leader tweeted a link to her keynote speech at Belfast Pride in which she discussed how equal marriage changed her life.

It comes after Theresa May announced the Conservatives were going to form a minority government with the support of the DUP, a Northern Irish party that are anti-same-sex-marriage, anti-abortion and take a dim party view on climate change.

Ian Paisley Jr. the son of the party's founder and one of the MP's that will be supporting May's new government in passing new legislation, has previously called homosexuality "repulsive" adding that he hates what gay and lesbian people do, and that they "harm themselves". On another occasion he said that same-sex marriage was "harmful to society" and "immoral, offensive, and obnoxious".

The Scottish Conservative leader got engaged to Jen Wilson, an Irish Catholic who was a key campaigner in the country's equal marriage referendum in 2015, in Paris last year. They were due to marry in October but were forced to postpone their wedding after their beloved cocker spaniel was struck by a car and they faced a five-figure bill from the vet.

Davidson has said she's received reassurances from May that LGBT rights will be protected in the next government.
