When it comes to jobs no one wants, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders must rank pretty highly.
Though, despite this, Sanders willingly stands up in front of Americans every day and tries to justify the bizarre and factually inaccurate statements which come out of the president’s mouth.
Though Sanders came face to face with factual evidence when she went on Fox News to discuss border security. She attempted to claim that terrorists were coming into the US through the Southern border, but was silenced by host Chris Wallace’s research on the issue. He pointed out that there was no statistical evidence to confirm that any terrorists were entering the country this way.
Sanders said:
We know that roughly nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists come into our country illegally, and we know that our most vulnerable point of entry is southern border.
But Wallace responded:
I know the statistic, I didn’t know if you were going to use it, but I studied up on this.
Do you know what those 4,000 people come where they are captured? Airports.
Sanders replied:
Not always…
To which Wallace concluded:
Airports. The state department says there hasn’t been any terrorists found coming across the southern border.
They’re not coming across the southern border, Sarah, they’re coming and they’re being stopped at airports.
Strangely for someone so used to facing off against the press, Sanders seemed unprepared for being presented with a statistic and was unable to deflect from his line of questioning.
Though for the presidency which coined the term "alternative facts", it's doubtful that numbers matter greatly to Sanders or the president. Meanwhile the US government shutdown, driven by disagreements between the Republicans and Democrats over wall funding, enters its third week, with thousands of federal workers missing pay cheques until an agreement can be reached.
