That eclipse image everyone is sharing is a beautiful, beautiful fake

While clouds thwarted many people's hopes of seeing the eclipse on Friday morning, you may have seen someone on your Facebook or Twitter feed share this amazing photo purportedly from the International Space Station:

Sadly, it is a fake. As Gizmodo points out, the image was originally created by an artist known as 'A4size-ska'.

However, it's not a photoshop, rather a "3D rendering" that took 38 hours to create using a software programme called Terragen. You can see a high resolution version of the original here.

We refer you back to that old adage: If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
