The latest instalment of the 50 Shades franchise hit the cinemas last week.

Critics don’t really like it.

Toronto Star’s Liz Braun called it:

Very, very boring. Very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, boring.

And yet, people are still shelling out the price of a cinema ticket to watch Ana Steele in various states of awkward disarray.

Which brings us to Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, a cinema in Australia.

After a screening of 50 Shades Darker, one employee found something in the cinema:

Yes that is a cucumber.

You might have a few questions, like:

  • Is this real or is it a PR stunt?
  • Why did the employee hold the vegetable without covering their hands?
  • Why would said employee post it online?
  • Just why?

Responding to claims of the incident being a publicity stunt, the cinema said:

ha ha I can assure you that you're giving us WAY too much credit...please remember too, this did occur on our busy student night, so it's likely a prank between friends (as opposed to anything more unsavoury). Not that we're complaining though! People (well MOST people) are getting a kick out this story judging by the 1.8 thousand likes on the original post. At the end of the day it's all just a bit of fun...

So if it wasn't a publicity stunt, what...what was it?

The cinema says that they had held a student night, and it was probably a prank pulled by one of the attendees.

They hope
