A school is delighted after a transgender teenager was crowned prom king.

Nick James Bulman won the coveted title at Barnstable High School in Hyannis, Cape Cod.

Bulman came out as a transgender man last year and he is taking male hormone testosterone and plans to have top surgery.

He was one of five young men nominated by teachers. He told WBZ: “Eighth-grade me would have never thought I would be here. Especially in a tux. It just feels like a weight’s off my shoulders — like I can be more free and open with all those around me and I’m happy with myself.”

It’s been like a really nice surprise and kind of a great acknowledgement from my peers and my community.

The teenager has a supportive community behind him, including his school, family and friends, and he was delighted to win the prize at his school dance, Cape Cod Times reports.

The theme was the Great Gatsby, and he went all out in a grey suit and red tie. His date, Kalyani Clarke, was matching in a red dress, and the event, if his Instagram photos are anything to go by, turned out to be a great hit. Clarke won prom queen.

“It was really awesome,” he told the paper about his time.

A class adviser called Lyn Vazquez praised Bulman: “[He] was a great candidate [for prom king] … He's just an all-around great person."
