Half of the women have gone from Donald Trump’s cabinet as a result of political machinations, unofficial firings, resignations and the ever-growing gulf between the president and some of his staff.

The US president’s cabinet didn’t have many female members of staff to begin with, but now their numbers have dwindled from six to three.

Donald Trump has forced out Homeland security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen earlier this week, and her exit was just the tip of the iceberg.

Almost two weeks ago small business administrator Linda McMahon announced she was leaving her position, and before that UN ambassador Nikki Haley left her position.

Haley has held the post since the beginning of Mr Trump's administration and said she would stay in the job through the end of the year.

At the time, Ms Haley described her time in the position as a "blessing," but offered no reason for leaving except a belief that government officials must know "when it’s time to step aside."

There are only three women left sitting at the table for Cabinet meetings; Elaine Chao (Transportation), Gina Haspel (CIA) and Betsy DeVos (Education).

If their roles are replaced by men, it will mean just 13 per cent of Trump’s Cabinet is made up of women – lower than during Barack Obama’s administration and George Bush’s administration – the lowest in decades - according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers.
