In what can only be described as a perfect storm of teenage narcissism and Japanese kitsch, young couples in Japan have started posting selfies of themselves kissing.
Here are a few examples:
MixChannel, a Japanese version of Vine primarily used by more than 3 million teenagers, has a whole section dedicated to “Kisu Douga”, or “kiss video” selfies. When relationships reach milestones (nine months OMG) the anniversary merits a compilation video too.
Journalist Mari Shibata wrote about the phenomenon for Motherboard, pointing out that although the videos are considered kawaii, a Japanese-specific idea of cuteness, parents have started to catch on to what their kids are doing and many don’t approve.
