Martin Luther King Jr.'s granddaughter gave her own 'I have a dream' speech on gun control

This nine-year-old echoed her granfather Martin Luther King. Jr when she spoke at the March For Our Lives rally on Saturday in Washington DC.

Invoking her grandfather's immortal words "I have a dream", young Yolanda Renee King stood on stage in the United States capital to give the thousands in attendance a rousing and inspirational speech.

She was joined on stage by Parkland shooting survivor Jaclyn Corin and gave an updated version of King's speech, which was made in Washington in 1963 at the height of the civil rights movement.

Her version of the speech called on people to rally against gun violence and begin to implement a "gun-free world." She said:

My grandfather had a dream that his four little children will not be judged by the colour of the skin, but the content of their character.

I have a dream that enough is enough. And that this should be a gun-free world, period.

She then asks the crowd to join in with a chant, which went:

Spread the word, have you heard?

All across the nation, we are going to be a great generation.

This was then passionately repeated twice by Yolanda and the crowd with everyone warmly receiving the youngster's words and applauding her.

Yolanda wasn't the only one of King's relatives in attendance at the rally, as his daughter and Yolanda's aunt Bernice was also present.

Bernice posted several messages of support for the students on the march and congratulated her niece on providing everyone with such an inspiring moment.

Speaking afterwards on CNNYolanda shared why she wanted to share her message with people around the world.

One of the things I want to help is that there will be no guns in this world.

Not just as schools but everywhere.
