Avengers: Endgame is well on its way to becoming the highest grossing box office movie of all-time but would it have had the same success if it were released 20 years ago?
In the 1990s barring the odd Batman movie, superheroes were not popular at the cinema as the standard action movie. Movies like Batman Forever and the Arnold Schwarzenegger starring Batman and Robin were deemed sillly and childish following the dark 90s additions to the cannon by Tim Burton. The superhero francises began to die off in public popularity until the more recent Avengers revivals of the superhero genre.
Now, thanks to the digital artist Mat from 'House of Mat' we can suspend our imaginations for a moment and ponder what the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have looked like if it had started in 1998 rather than 2008.
First up we have The Hulk, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch and Ant-Man who have been recast as David Duchovny, Denzel Washington, Alicia Silverstone and Ben Stiller respectively. Duchovny as a complex and tortured Bruce Banner, is a particularly inspired casting, in our humble opinion.
Now we have Falcon, Iron Man and Thor who are all played by Anthony Mackie, Robert Downey Jr and Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel Universe. Yet, if it was made in the 90s those roles could have very well gone to Eddie Murphy, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, which would have probably made for a very different tone.
Up next we have the group of Vision, Captain America, Hawkeye, War Machine and Wasp who are now being played by Dolph Lundgren, Leonardo di Caprio, Johnny Depp, Cuba Gooding Jr and Sandra Bullock.
We would argue that Di Caprio would have been a bit too young to play Captain America at this point in his career but he would have probably still done a great job.
Lastly, we have Spider-Man, Pepper Potts, Star Lord and Doctor Strange who are now played by Michael J. Fox, Sharon Stone, Brendan Fraser and Keanu Reeves. We aren't entirely sold on Fox as Peter Parker but would take Reeves over Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr Strange any day of the week.
