Instagram, the home of the selfie, has just turned 10.
Over the last decade, famous performers, models and reality stars have come to dominate the app. It’ll be no surprise then that, with only one exception, the majority of the most-liked photos from the last 10 years are celebrity shots.
Justin Bieber, the Kardashian-Jenner clan and an egg – yes, an egg – have made notable appearances on Instagram over the last decade.
To mark the photo app’s birthday, here’s a look back at the most-liked photos from each year of its existence.
In its starting year, the most liked photo was of Instagram creator Kevin Systrom's toes and a dog in Mexico. The photo only has 190,000 likes – nothing by today's standards.
The caption? A simple 'test'.
Back in 2011, teenage heartthrob Justin Bieber posted a family picture with his dad and little siblings. The photo now has a little over 270,000 likes now. So, more than the previous year but still not much.
In 2012, everybody was a One Direction fangirl. So much so that two of its members, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, nabbed the top spot for a Halloween photo. The image now has over 1.2m likes.
Justin Bieber once again takes the top spot but, this time, he's sharing the accolade with 'Uncle Will'. Uncle Will is, of course, Hollywood legend Will Smith. The photo now has over 1.5m likes.
Kimye's wedding shot took the top spot for 2014. The photo of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West tying the knot, taken at their extravagant wedding in Italy, is now fast approaching 2.5m likes.
First, it was a Kardashian, then it was a Jenner. In 2015, Kim's sister Kendall took the top spot for a photo of her lying down with artistically-placed hair. It has over 3.6m likes.
This sponsored post of Selena Gomez sipping on a bottle of Coke with her lyrics on was the most liked photo of 2016. At the time, Gomez was the most followed female on Instagram. The photo has over 7m likes.
We all remember this iconic photo. Beyonce announced her pregnancy to the world by posting a picture of her cradling her stomach in front of nature. The Carters, Beyonce and Jay Z, thanked fans for their "well wishes". Over 11m people have now liked the photo of Beyonce pregnant with twins.
Another Jenner broke the internet in 2018 when she revealed on Instagram that she had given birth to her daughter with then-boyfriend Travis Scott. In the post, she announced that the baby was called 'Stormi Webster'. It has 18.5m likes.
In a totally bizarre turn of events, the most liked photo of 2019 was of an egg. As part of a world record challenge, the egg got liked 54m times – making it the most-liked Instagram post ever.
The photo with the most likes this year is an announcement of actor Chadwick Boseman's death. Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016 and passed away in August of this year. The photo now has over 19m likes.
