We can all agree that 2020 has been unlike any year that anyone can remember and we all have our thoughts on who the heroes and the villains of the last 12 months are but few families, barring the Trumps, have dominated the headlines like the Kardashians have.
Whereas most people on the planet have hunkered down and attempted to see out lockdown without any drama, reality television's first family have barely been able to keep out of the news, sometimes for good but mostly bad reasons. There was also the odd bit of completely surreal Kardashian news as well that only they could create.
Nearly all of the Kardashians and their closest family members were wrapped up in some sort of controversy in 2020 and looking back through them will make you thankful that you aren't a member of a family that attracts tabloid headlines every time your sibling posts an Instagram picture.
So without further ado here are all the worst and downright strangest Kardashian moments of 2020.
Being accused of breaking Covid-19 safety guidelines multiple times
At one point in 2020 you couldn't move for stories of the Kardashians allegedly breaking Covid-19 health and safety guidelines. Now, let's be honest, we've all probably broken the boundaries of what is being deemed acceptable and safe this year, as is human nature but the Kardashians exploited these rules to almost ridiculous levels.
Within months of the stay-at-home orders being issued in California, the Kardashians were already landing themselves in trouble by blatantly hanging out with each other and then posting it all over social media. They probably would have gotten away with it if they didn't start snapping selfies of themselves.
For anyone who watched the recent episodes of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, you'll have seen that both Khloe Kardashian and Kanye West tested positive for Covid-19 in the early months of the pandemic making this type of approach to things even more alarming.
Things really started to ramp up and get worst towards the end of October when Kim Kardashian celebrated her 40th birthday. Firstly she had a huge surprise birthday thrown for her in Los Angeles, which, to be fair did have on-site testing. That party didn't cause any notable controversy but that was before Kim literally hired a private island and jetted out more than 40 of her friends and family so they could all have fun together. Kim said that everyone had quarantined and had multiple tests but the whole thing came across as a bit tone-deaf given that the rest of the planet had been unable to see their loved ones all year in order to keep them safe and stop the spread of the virus.
Kim did get some level of comeuppance after one of her tweets became a viral meme.
The Kardashian's weren't done there though. Just a week later Kendall Jenner hosted her 25th birthday party which had 100 people in attendance. Sneakily they had tried to keep this shindig from leaking on social media but inevitably pictures ended up on the internet, cue another barrage of criticism.
All in all, the Kardashian's really let themselves down and set a poor example to their millions and millions of social media followers. That being said, they have reportedly cancelled their traditional Christmas Eve party so at least that's one good pandemic related thing they've done.
Kanye running for president and Kim not voting for him
Kanye West had quite a year and most of those stories are best left for another day. Beyond his own personal issues, possibly the most eyebrow-raising thing that the world-renowned rapper did in 2020 was run for president.
As we all know, things didn't work out too well for Kanye as he didn't exactly rock the political boat or steal any considerable votes from Joe Biden or Donald Trump. However, one weird side effect from this was that none of the Kardashian's publically endorsed either of the main candidates. Maybe they didn't want to upset Kanye or maybe it was because of Kim's previous ties to Trump, who she had worked with on prison reforms.
However, on election day and the day that Biden was confirmed as the winner, it appeared that Kim might have very well voted for the Democrats. Firstly her Twitter activity on election day suggested that she cast her ballot for Biden then just days later she tweeted a picture of Biden and vice-president-elect Kamala Harris.
Kanye seemed to take the loss on the chin and who knows, we might see him run a better and more substantial campaign in the future. Still, at least it wasn't as embarrassing as that photoshoot they did on a caravan park…
Kylie Jenner being accused of not tipping generously
Despite being just 23 years old, Kylie Jenner is one of the world's richest young people. Her cosmetics brand reportedly being worth a staggering $900 million and this was even after Forbes had to strip her of her title of the world's 'youngest self-made billionaire' after she had allegedly deceived the publication about her finances.
That controversy aside, she obviously still very rich and can probably give a considerable tip when she is out for dinner. This is apparently not what allegedly happened when she was served by Julia Carolan at a 'fancy Manhattan restaurant.' Earlier this year, Ann claimed on TikTok that after serving Kylie, the star had only tipped $20 on a $500 meal.
We can't confirm or deny this accusation, so make of this what you will.
Although this might cast some doubt on Kylie's image we're gonna say that she was almost redeemed when comedian Steff Todd did a parody of Kylie as a Yorkshire woman who had just won on a scratch card and decided to set her own business up as she was 'sick of working at Superdrug.'
Kanye’s birthday president for Kim’s birthday was a hologram of her dad
Perhaps the weirdest Kardashian-related story of 2020 was also related to Kim's 40th birthday, which seems to have generated as many headlines as coronavirus has this year. For the big bash Kanye got Kim an unconventional present. Whereas most husbands would have probably gotten their other half a nice bracelet or a holiday, Kanye decided he would get Kim a hologram of her father Robert, who died of cancer in 2003.
We're gonna leave any judgment on this matter to you but its worth bearing in mind that Kanye could have gotten this hologram to say literally anything. Instead, he got it to say "You married the most, most, most, most, most genius man of all time, Kanye West." Yep...
Social media kills Keeping Up With the Kardashians
Season 18 of Keeping Up With The Kardashians started to air in March 2020 so much of that season managed to avoid the pandemic. However, as it would turn out a pivotal moment in the show's entire history would happen in the season's very first episode. As tensions boiled over between Kim and Kourtney over the laters ever-lapsing commitment to the show and filming, the two sisters actually came to physical blows and duked it out in a fight that could have headlined Madison Square Garden.
That arguably wasn't the most shocking news related to the show.
Depending on your thoughts on KUWTK, you were either saddened or delighted to hear the news that the show was coming to an end after 13 years on television having first debuted in 2007. Kourtney's departure from the show (she will not have a major role in the final season) obviously doesn't help matters but it was the show's matriarch Kris Jenner, who confirmed why it was coming to an end.
Speaking to Women’s Wear Daily, Jenner explained that the show had become somewhat irrelevant due to all of the family's overwhelming presence on social media, something which wasn't a huge deal when they started the show all those years ago. Jenner said, "When we first started, there was no Instagram or Snapchat or other social media platforms. The world has changed. The viewer doesn’t have to wait three or four months to see an episode. We can give them all of the information anyone would ever want to know in real-time."
Just like the news and democracy, social media claims another victim in Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
So that was the Kardashians 2020; full of health and safety risks, fights, questionable photoshoots, politics, social media mockery, holograms and the end of the show that made us all fall in love with them (or despise them) in the first place.
Surely we can only hope for more in 2021?
