Theresa May has been filmed playing football in her Maidenhead constituency as she praised English teams for marking a historic week in the sport.

The prime minister tweeted a video of herself kicking a ball around with children on Saturday.

“It’s been a historic week for English football, with Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea inspiring children, adults, prime ministers,” she wrote online.

Arsenal and Chelsea will meet in the Europa League final on 29 May while Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool will compete in the Champions League final on 1 June.

The matches will mark the first time teams from one country fill all four European final spots in a single season.

The prime minister was in Maidenhead to support a local women’s football team and visit the town’s Cox Green village fayre, during what she described as a “lovely day” of constituency events.

Ms May was mocked earlier in the week for trying to compare Liverpool’s remarkable comeback against semi-final opponents Barcelona to her attempts to secure a Brexit deal.

“I actually think that when we look at the Liverpool win over Barcelona last night, what it shows is that when everyone says it’s all over, that your European opposition have got you beat, the clock is ticking down, it’s time to concede defeat, actually we can still secure success if everyone comes together,” she said during prime minister’s questions on Wednesday.

Liverpool had lost 3-0 to Barcelona in the first leg of their semi-final, only to triumph 4-3 on aggregate.
