Comedian Joe Lycett had the most over-the-top opening for his new kitchen extension.

You might think inviting a few friends over for an opening ceremony is a bit much, but not for Joe, who invited the great and good of Birmingham to the unveiling.

It all started in March, when Lycett wrote to Lord Mayor of Birmingham Yvonne Mosquito asking her to attend the ribbon cutting.

Unfortunately, the Lord Mayor had to decline because she does not attend private events.

But, if it was a public ticketed event that could change things…

So Lycett opened a raffle for four members of the public to attend the ceremony.

That’s when the event started to spin out of control – Lycett was inundated with “thousands of entries for tickets” and a few media requests.

And when he tried to shut the joke down, fans were having none of it.

By now, the ceremony had to go ahead – there were guests, the Lord Mayor was involved, even Radio 1 had agreed to be the official host broadcaster.

And go ahead it did – with Lord Mayor Mosquito giving the ceremony the grandeur it deserved.

As well as Birmingham’s Lord Mayor and those four lucky members of the public, the star-studded event was attended by comedian Katherine Ryan, Soccer AM presenter Lloyd Griffith and Nick Owen from BBC Midlands Today.

This is what Lycett had to say about the ceremony:

The Lord Mayor did a great job. Her speech was exceptional and I can’t ask for more than that…

Maybe a royal next time.

It was a truly special night for a truly special kitchen extension.
