The difference between Michelle Obama and Melania in one tweet

Comparisons between the White House occupants today and a year ago always throw up some sharp and occasionally worrying contrasts.

The role of First Lady can have as much an impact on an administration and its output as the occupant of the Oval Office.

Some First Ladies take on the more traditional, ceremonial role as the nation's hostess, while other former First Ladies have had policy agendas, their own portfolios and used their office as a force for good. Others have simply found a comfortable balance between the two.

We're yet to learn what a First Gentleman might do in the role.

On Tuesday, the human rights campaigner Malala Yousafzai joined Twitter.

The young woman, aged 20, is famous for surviving a gun attack from the Taliban in 2012, her subsequent campaign for education and human rights, and her book He Named Me Malala.

Former first lady Michelle Obama wished Malala a happy birthday on Wednesday.

In this instance, Melania chose not to copy Michelle's words.

Melania's official FLOTUS Twitter feed is certainly less active than under Michelle Obama, tweeting once every few days as opposed to every few hours.

While the theory that Melania Trump is not best plesed with the Trump world, it's worth remembering she's been his accomplice on past occasions too.

In 2011, Melania concurred with her husband's calls to demand to see the long form birth certificate of President Obama.
