'Incels', short for 'involuntary celibates', is a toxic masculine subculture that rose from the misogynist depths of the internet and onto newspaper headlines in recent months, after the suspect behind the Toronto van attack was linked to the community.
Now, incels appear to have the last thing they deserve: a dating website. California-based Date An Incel launched this week, hoping to match raging sexists with women who love men who hate women, somehow. And apparently it's serious.
Its Twitter account, with 23 followers and counting, promises the new community will help heal the world. How? Through peddling dangerous myths and putting blame for the sins of violent men on women's shoulders.
"Love creates change," its website declares. Sold as a way for progressive, loving women to "reduce risks that plague society", it calls for them to have sex with a incels, a group the site outrageously calls a "minority".
If the key to your heart is violent misogyny and you have "felt moved by the recent media attention around the incel movement", just fill in this handy questionnaire and they'll match you up with a lonely incel in need of a vagina:
In other words, it puts responsibility on women to date these men before they kill again.
'Rebecca', allegedly a real 32-year-old woman, is a Date An Incel testimonial who signed up in order to "contribute to solving the problems of the world with incredible love", the website boasts. She (apparently) was bursting with joy about her meeting with incel 'Brad':
Brad and I agreed to meet in person. I knew instantly Brad was the man I loved. I knew I could help him and that in my helping him, I would be utilising my romantic life as a signal for greater change.
Social media users are responding with appropriate horror to a website that promises to protect and even 'save' a community linked to mass killers, including the suspects behind shootings at Quebec City mosque, the Santa Fe High School and Isla Vista.
Incels have forged inward-looking communities across the internet, most prominently on Reddit where their groups frequently go under total identity change to avoid getting shut down yet again.
Go looking for incels (don't do this) and you will be immediately slammed over the head with a sexist, blind rhetoric that resents 'Staceys', conventionally attractive women who refuse to have sex with incels, and their male equivalent, 'Chads', who 'Staceys' have sex with instead. The incel mantra is that women, particularly beautiful women, owe them sex.
Discussions career dangerously into violent misogyny and rape fantasies; whereas women are taught from childhood to blame themselves for feeling undesirable, these men think their virginity it is the fault of women.
Though perhaps there are some positives to the dating website...
