Redditors have been discussing the songs beloved by so many which actually have weird sentiments when you listen to the lyrics carefully.
Some of them are songs with upbeat melodies so nobody noticed, or maybe everyone else did and they're just twisted.
1. 'Delilah', Sir Tom Jones (1968)
Someone pointed out that the narrative of this song is someone finding their partner (Delilah) having sex with another man. Later the narrator knocks on their door, Delilah laughs at him, and so he stabs her to death.
But still, listen to those pipes.
She stood there laughing I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more
My, my, my, Delilah
2. 'Sunny Came Home', Shawn Colvin (1996)
This song has often been thought of as a love song, but as one Redditor accurately points out, the lyrics are about a woman burning down her house.
Get the kids and bring a sweater
Dry is good and wind is better
Count the years, you always knew it
Strike a match, go on and do it
3. 'Copacabana' by Barry Manilow (1978)
The jaunty melody, plus an episode of Friends set at the wedding of Rachel's ex-fiancé, make many people miss the sad story that is being told. The song is about Lola (she was a showgirl), whose lover Tony the bartender was shot and killed after defending Lola from a customer. Now Lola sits in the same bar which has become a nightclub, struggling with alcoholism, and wearing the same dress she worse three decades earlier.
Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl
But that was thirty years ago,
when they used to have a show
Now it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in the dress she used to wear
Faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she's lost her mind
4. 'Run for your life', the Beatles (1965)
When romance meets death threats in swinging London.
Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won't know where I am
5. 'Don't stand so close to me', the Police (1980)
This song is about being a teacher and being attracted to one of your underage students.
So bad it makes him cry
Wet bus stop, she's waiting
His car is warm and dry
The lyrics go on to reference 'that book by Nabokov' i.e. Lolita.
It featured prominently in a 2009 episode of Glee, sung by Mr Schuester to student Rachael, in a way that was definitely not creepy at all.
6. 'Macarena', Los del Rio (1995)
A mainstay of every school disco and wedding reception, very few people take the time to translate the lyrics from the original Spanish. One part in particular is a little worrying considering how many pre-teens have this dance memorised.
Macarena tiene un novio que se llama,
que se llama de apellido Vitorino,
y en la jura de bandera del muchacho
se la dió con dos amigos…Aaay!
Which in English reads:
Macarena has a boyfriened who's called...
who's called the last name Vitorino,
and while he was taking his oath as a conscript
she was giving it to two friends ...Aaay!
7. 'In the air tonight', Phil Collins (1981)
Most people remember this for the drum solo, and the drum solo as performed by the Cadbury's gorilla. But the lyrics, are quite malevolent.
Well if you told me you were drowning,
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend,
but I don't know if you know who I am
Well I was there and I saw what you did,
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin,
I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies
8. '99 Red Baloons', Nena (1983)
While this song isn't 'creepy' per se, it's subject matter is much darker than most people assume. In the song, the red balloons in question are mistaken for an air attack, and as a result the Soviet bloc and the west go to war.
Ninety nine red balloons
Floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, its red alert
There 's something here from somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
The final verse makes reference to the now destroyed city:
It's all over and I'm standing pretty
In this dust that was a city
One Redditor even took the liberty of making a Spotify playlist of these songs and more with creepy lyrics. For your listening pleasure, sort of.
