As if this year couldn't have more calamities, Quality Street has confirmed that the staple Toffee Deluxe will be replaced for good.
The original announcement in September that the Toffee Deluxe would be substituted by something called 'Honeycomb Crunch' (so, like a Crunchie, then?) has been reinforced by new pronouncements from the chocolatiers.
At the time, many consumers voiced their anger on social media.
Change? But we don't like change.
But then manufacturers Nestlé offered a reprieve from the dismay.
Like a parent caving in to a brat child monster, Quality Street has decided to reinstate the Toffee Deluxe sweet - BUT only this once, and just for Christmas 2016.
Then we'll all have to eat our
vegetables Honeycomb Crunch.
A spokesperson for Nestle confirmed to indy100 that Toffee Deluxe will be gone from Quality Street boxes.
We wanted to celebrate Quality Street’s 80th birthday by introducing the first new sweet for nearly a decade. We did extensive research and found that the Honeycomb Crunch was the most popular option for a new sweet and that many people felt there were enough toffee based sweets in the collection so the Toffee Deluxe made way.
Consumers can have one last taste of the treat this Christmas. A temporary stay of execution of sorts has been awarded to Toffee Deluxe.
As we know, appeasement never satifies the aggressor, and consumers are still angry at the two month old news that it's being replaced.
In another concession to the mob, Quality Street customer care has been reassurring the public that the Toffee Deluxe will be available in their 'Toffee and Fudge cartons'.
Toffee Deluxe fans can still find the sweet in our Quality Street Toffee & Fudge pack which contains the Toffee Deluxe alongside the Toffee Finger, Toffee Penny and Fudge. Those who also want to try the Honeycomb Crunch can find both sweets in a limited edition tin exclusive to Tesco stores
The spokesperson for Quality Street also addeed that 2016 is not the first year the Toffe and Fudge packs have been available for purchase.
