The country has seen around a million of them arrive since January, and now "refugees" is Germany's word of the year.

The Society for German Language said on Friday the word "Flüchtlinge" - the word generally used in German to refer to everyone who have made the risky crossing to Europe and trekked across the Balkans - stands for "the dominant issue of the year."

The word doesn't differentiate between people from different countries, nor question economic or humanitarian status, the way 'migrant' and 'refugee' does in English.
