Getting injured during sex sounds like a bad storyline to a soap opera - but it is very real and can happen in all manner of ways.

Just think about all of those repetitive movements and those muscles that you don't use too often.

It's bound to cause you all sorts of physical trouble, and the possibility of death isn't entirely out of the question! Let's not get too morbid though.

Injuries during intercourse are far more common than what you might think, and of course you'll want to avoid them.

So, in order to steer clear of any mishaps these are the sexual acts that could cause you a serious injury (and how to remedy some), according to science.

Sex toys

Sex toys come in all shapes and sizes these days and many less experienced people wince at the sight of some.

Only a small amount of research has been conducted into injuries associated with sex objects.

One study by Sexual Medicine Reviews found that inserting items into a urethra was very dangerous and could lead to serious injuries like penis fractures.

There is also the issue of losing an object...

Cosmopolitan report that the best way to avoid the nightmare situation is to only use toys designed for their specific purpose, don't get invented.

Pulling a muscle

This is a classic injury that has probably happened to us all, regardless if it occurs during sex or not.

Just like any form of exercise, your body needs to warm up - and that applies to sex as well.

To eradicate any signs of cramp or muscle strain during sex it is best to work your way up to any sort of advanced position.

Carpet burn

Burns of any kind are truly horrible but a carpet burn has to be the easiest one to achieve.

Carpet burns are easily avoidable though - just avoid doing "it" on the floor, or at least putting a few blankets down.

If you are unable to contain yourself and do suffer this nasty bit of friction burn Women's Health recommend that wash the area with cool water and antibacterial soap to avoid any infection.

Should the skin be broken, treat it with an anti-septic wipe and antibacterial cream before applying a bandage. Safety can be sexy.

Vaginal tear

According to IFL Science vaginal tears are real but aren't too common.

After all, the vagina can handle a baby.t.

Bustle add that if they should a tear happen, it is usually because the vagina is a too dry before intercourse but most tears will heal on their own.

Broken penis

Unlike the vagina, the penis is a genital that is far more susceptible to injury.

A number of sexual positions have been found to be very dangerous for the penis, including "cowgirl" and "doggy style."

A study by the International Journal of Impotence found that these positions were found to cause swelling, broken frenulums, urethral bleeding and acute urinary retention.

Another study by Advances in Urology found that "women on top" positions was the most common cause of penis injury, attributing the 50 per cent of the cases they studied.

Masturbation

The aforementioned study by the International Journal of Impotence also found that masturbation or penile manipulation, is a major cause of injury.

Their study found that penile manipulation, which accounts for all sorts of things, such as tucking the genital into a pair of pants, was responsible for 18 per cent of penis fractures.

Unsurprisingly, this is mostly because men overestimate the strength of their own penis. The study is quoted as saying:

Many patients believe that the penis has a bone structure or cartilage, and that these are responsible for erections, they may try to manipulate their penises and make them snap – like fingers.

Good grief!

Missionary

Believe it or not, even good old missionary, the most basic of sexual acts, comes with its own perils.

The same study from the International Journal of Impotence found that missionary was responsible for 26 per cent of sexual injuries.

They suspect that this is mostly down to the fact that the man has the majority of the control in this position and can sometimes be a bit too vigorous in their movements.
