Mikki Willis from California is a pretty cool dad.

When his son Azai got two of the same present for his birthday, Mikki took him to the toy shop to exchange it for something else.

After having a look around Azai came back with a Little Mermaid doll, complete with purple tiara.

Holding the doll up to the camera, Mikki asks:

How do you think a dad feels when his son asks to get this?

And the answer is:

I let my boys choose their life. Choose your expression, choose what you're into, choose your sexuality... you have my promise forever to love you and accept you no matter what life you choose.

The video in which Mikki tells his sons that they can express themselves outside binary gender stereotypes has been watched 13million times on Facebook since he uploaded it at the weekend.

In a Facebook post Mikki said he was overwhelmed by the response the video has had.

I see so much negativity being shared through social media that this is my way of bringing a little balance... To know we've touched people beyond our immediate community is both humbling and awesome!

Considering that there's still a fair amount of resistance to breaking down gender stereotypes marketed at children, dads like Mikki are blazing a trail, notwithstanding the fact that whatever doll you choose, it doesn't say anything about your sexuality.

Check out the video below (but maybe turn the volume down first because Azai gets a bit excited):
