Which Harry Potter house would the Sorting Hat put you in? The answer might tell you more about yourself than you'd expect, according to research to be published in the journal of Personality and Individual Differences.
A team from Stetson University led by assistant professor Laura Cysel looked at the big five personality traits and how they applied to JK Rowling's four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.
Crysel and authors asked Harry Potter fans which house they were assigned in a test on Pottermore, JK Rowling's online community for fans of her books, and then tested whether their personalities fitted particular traits.
They recruited fans via Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook and were testing to see if the characteristics JK Rowling assigned to the houses, e.g. brave Gryffindor, agreeable Hufflepuffs, clever Ravenclaws and sneaky Slytherins were present.
“For the most part, our hypotheses were supported,” said Crysel. “We found that Rowling’s sorting quiz taps into some of the traits that personality psychologists measure.”
