To succeed at Who Wants To Be A Millionaire you need to have an outstanding amount of general knowledge in your arsenal and also a stroke of luck.
We doubt that WWTBAM contestant Gareth Kendall would consider losing a leg as a stroke of luck but, in a way, it did help him win big on the most recent episode of the show.
After reaching the £125,000 question without any lifelines remaining Gareth was posed with the following question.
The ruins of Urquhart Castle stand on the banks of which loch?
His options were: Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, Loch Broom and Loch Maree.
Now, unless you've actually visited Urquhart Castle, or have an encyclopedic knowledge of Scottish lochs, then you would probably have to hazard a guess at this question.
Amazingly, not only had Gareth been to the castle - it was the site of a life-changing crash that caused him to lose one of his legs.
Speaking to host Jeremy Clarkson, he said:
I know this. And I know this because I lost my leg there. Not at the castle, chill out.
I lost it in Inverness. If I remember rightly, there on the loch, and I wasn’t there long, there is a little inlet with a castle ruin there, so I’ll go Loch Ness.
My wife would kill me if I lost this much money!
A shocked Clarkson then asked if Loch Ness was Gareth's final answer, which it of course was - and it was inevitably correct much to everyone's relief and delight.
He then went on to explain:
We had booked a tour to go to see it and that day I crashed. I remember the castle.
I’m pretty certain it’s one of the only castles up there.
Unfortunately for Gareth, that's where his coincidences dried up and he was unable to answer the £250,000 question, which was about museums in London.
Rather than risk an answer he decided to take the money, which was probably the best option.
However, Clarkson did later reveal that Gareth instincts on the museum question were correct that he should have stuck to his gut.
Still, 125,000 quid shouldn't be sniffed at. Well done Gareth.
Also, isn't this the plot to Slumdog Millionaire?
