Rarely a week goes by where someone isn't complaining about vegetarians or vegans and a meat based snack somehow being ruined.

Today it's the Marks and Spencer sweets Percy Pig now being declared 100 per cent vegetarian-friendly as all gelatine has been removed from the treats.

This has predictably caused some up roar from the likes of Piers Morgan and co.

However, one thing that may make you think next time you eat meat is this call that LBC Radio host, James O'Brien received on Tuesday.

A listener named Ian called into the show to share an anecdote in relation to a school in Leeds, that has decided to raise pigs and slaughter them on it's own farm to teacher pupils about the food chain.

Ian explained to James how as a child he looked after two piglets, which he named Jack and Jill, that were later slaughtered, causing him great distress.

If you going to do anything nasty to an animal - don't name it. I went and spoke to Jack and Jill everyday.

I tried to teach them to speak English and Welsh and they grew up and they got happier and they loved me because pigs are intelligent.

Then, of course, they got very large and they brought them down from the back of the garden to right outside the kitchen window.

Killing a pig is one of the most awful things you will ever see. First of all they are very intelligent and they knew exactly what was happening.

They hung it upside down, hoisted it above a huge metal bath and slit it's throat. I've never seen so much blood in my life. It was absolutely awful.

Uncle John, who killed it, he then cut something out of its throat which he called a squeaker which is something to do with the voice box and chased me around the kitchen with it squeaking it with blood all over his hands.

Honestly James, I'm 79 now and I still think of that and this might sound corny, but once a week wouldn't be an exaggeration.

Despite this Ian admitted that the experience didn't put him entirely off meat but he does draw the line at bacon so make of that what you will.
