One of the icons of British cinema, actor and film director Richard Attenborough, died yesterday, just short of his 91st birthday.

As an actor he was best known for his roles in Brighton Rock, The Great Escape and Jurassic Park.

He then went on to become an accomplished director, most notably for A Bridge Too Far, Gandhi, for which he won Academy Awards as director and producer, in 1982, and Cry Freedom.
