How to turn off autoplay videos on Twitter and Facebook

Autoplay is that person in the horror film who whispers too loudly, and gets you all found by the killer.

It tells your boss that you are not working, and it makes you 'watch' three seconds of videos about which you could not care less.

According to Mashable, Twitter and Facebook have videos set to autoplay in order to increase the number of views the social networks can boast.

This is how to turn them off, depending on your platform.

Mobile apps - Android

Facebook app

  • Select the menu (bottom right corner)
  • Select 'Never Autoplay Videos'

Twitter app

  • Select your avatar (top left corner)
  • Selected Settings and Privacy>Accessibility
  • Scroll to the bottom of the column on the left
  • Uncheck 'Video Autoplay'

Mobile apps - iOS

Facebook app (iOS)

  • Select the menu (bottom right corner)
  • Settings>Account Settings>Videos and Photos>Autoplay
  • Select 'Never Autoplay Videos'

Twitter app

  • Same on Android

Desktops

Twitter desktop

  • Select your avatar (top right corner)
  • Follow steps for Android and iOS

Facebook desktop

  • Select drop down menu top right of home screen
  • Settings>Videos
  • From the 'Auto-Play Videos' setting select the drop down
  • Choose 'Off'
