The number of pet cats in the UK has risen by 500,000 over the past year.
But the stereotype of the lonely old woman surrounded by moggies is being turned on its head, because men are responsible for a quarter of this rise.
In 2016, 13 per cent of men owned cats; now that figure is 17 per cent, according to the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association.
Men have been encouraged to get a feline friend because of the their rising profile on social media, according to the association.
Cats Protection’s Social Media Manager, Gemma Croker, said:
Cats have always been on social media but we have definitely noticed more men openly expressing their love for their feline friends.
It is possible that this trend may have triggered an increase in popularity for cats among the general male population, which is great news for re-homing cats.
It’s no mystery that furry friends are a women-magnet, either. Certain dating experts say that a cute picture of a cat or dog encourage right swiping and conversation.
It seems the trend of Tinder pictures of men posing with tigers has downsized. The Instagram account HotDuesWithKittens is testament to the new trend of posing with cats to win over the ladies.
