Santa gets a boyfriend in powerful new Norwegian Christmas advert

A Norwegian Christmas advert that shows Santa getting a boyfriend has tugged at the world’s heartstrings.

The commercial, by Norwegian postal service Posten, is called When Harry Met Santa – obviously referencing hit film When Harry Met Sally – and shows the developing relationship between the two men over the years.

It starts with Harry going downstairs on Christmas Eve to get a glass of water and catching Santa delivering presents. The next year, he waits up to catch another glimpse.

The third year, he sleeps on the sofa to wait for Santa’s arrival, who wakes him up by telling him “you’re snoring” and gives him a toy after telling him he’ll be back next year.

The next year, the two share a drink and a joke before Santa has to get back to work, then – realising their bond – the two get upset at the prospect of only seeing each other once a year.

So, Harry writes a letter saying “Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is you”, accompanied with a little heart drawing and sends it to the North Pole.

Later, the doorbell rings and Harry expects to see Santa, but it is just a neighbour giving him some packages addressed to him. But when he returns to his living room, Santa is there and the two kiss.

The advert was created to mark 50 years since homosexuality was decriminalised in Norway.

The postal service’s marketing director Monica Solberg told LGBTQ Nation: “Posten is an inclusive workplace with great diversity, and we would like to celebrate the 50th anniversary with this fine love story.

“In last year’s campaign, Santa was angry at Norway Post, which took away from him the ‘business’ – this year, Santa is happy that Norway Post can relieve him a little, so that he can be with the one he loves.”

Heartwarming stuff.
