Parliament overwhelmingly votes to hold an early general election

Boris Johnson is set to secure a 12 December general election after MPs passed a bill to trigger a pre-Christmas poll.

The prime minister had earlier avoided a potential obstacle when the House of Commons deputy speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, refused to allow votes on Labour amendments calling for the vote to be given to EU citizens and 16- and 17-year olds.

The government had said it would pull the bill if either of the amendments passed.

MPs also voted by 315 to 295 to reject an amendment tabled by Jeremy Corbyn to change the date of the election to 9 December, three days earlier than ministers wanted.

Steve Baker has told the Commons he was informed by "an authoritative source" that the government "have not given way" on the election date.

The Tory Brexiteer said he had sought clarity on rumours that the government had agreed to Labour's amendment calling for the vote to be moved from 12 December to 9 December.

He said: "I just popped out to ask authoritatively, from an authoritative source, whether we've given way on the date and I understand that the government have not given way on the date."

Tory Rehman Chishti has called for civility and respect ahead of the next election, recalling abuse he received during the 2017 campaign.

The Gillingham and Rainham MP said he was told to "f*** off back to country X" as he campaigned two years ago.

"My country is this great country and Gillingham is my hometown. So do I f*** off back to Gillingham?" he added

Deputy speaker Rosie Winterton then intervened to steer debate back to the issue of the proposed election date.

Labour's amendment has been defeated by 315 votes to 295. We will have a general election on 12 December, not 9 December, if the government's bill is passed.

MPs are now filing back out to vote on the third reading of the government's bill. If it passes, there will be a general election on Thursday, 12 December.

A reminder that the government's bill is a short bill which requires only a simple majority to trigger an election.

Boris Johnson has previously failed three times to force an election through the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act, under which a majority of two thirds is needed.

Jeremy Corbyn has said the December election will be "a once-in-a-generation chance to transform our country and take on the vested interests holding people back".

In a statement issued immediately after MPs passed the government will, the Labour leader added: "The choice at this election could not be clearer.

"A Labour government will be on your side, while Boris Johnson’s Conservatives – who think they’re born to rule – will only look after the privileged few.

“We will now launch the most ambitious and radical campaign for real change that our country has ever seen. This is our chance to build a country for the many not the few and fit for the next generation.”
