Boris Johnson says Government will table motion on Monday calling for a General Election on December 12

Boris Johnson has offered MPs more time to debate his Brexit deal in parliament if opposition parties grant him a general election ahead of Christmas.

The prime minister appealed to Jeremy Corbyn to support a motion for an early election next week, as Mr Johnson cannot call a poll without the support of two thirds of MPs. But Labour is divided over whether to support the plan, as the party is trailing in the polls.

Mr Corbyn said he would wait for the EU answer on whether there will be a Brexit extension before deciding whether to back an election vote on Monday.

It comes as Mr Johnson faced a battle to get his Queen’s Speech passed today, but will not quit even if MPs vote it down, No 10 has said. It would be the first time a government had lost its legislative programme since 1924 – when PM Stanley Baldwin was forced to resign.

Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, tweeted her thoughts against holding a general election.

She wrote: "PM trying to have his cake and eat it. He doesn't want his Bill scrutinised. He doesn't want the people to have a say over his rotten deal.

"A GE will not resolve Brexit, and it must not happen until No Deal is properly secured and until people have had a final say."

Who would win a general election? - Sean O'Grady

"Anyone wondering why the Labour Party, consistently trailing about 10 points behind the Conservatives, sometimes seems so eager to have a general election need only be referred to the remark by Richard Burgon, the shadow justice secretary, during a routine knockabout on Sky’s Kay Burley breakfast. Reminded that his party was behind in the polls, Mr Burgon declared: “The polls said we wouldn’t win last time,” only to be sharply corrected by Ms Burley – “you didn’t”.

↵Voters say violence against MPs and serious injuries to public 'price worth paying' to get favoured Brexit outcome

Voters on both sides of the Brexit divide believe that violence against MPs and members of the public is a "price worth paying" to secure their favoured Brexit outcome, a shocking new study has found.

A majority of both Leave and Remain voters would be happy to accept attacks on politicians and violent protests in which members of the public are badly injured if it meant they got Brexit outcome they want, according to a new polls.

Researchers said they were "genuinely shocked" by the findings, which come amid concerns about threats against MPs.

Boris Johnson's Queen's Speech passed by MPs as he demands December general election

Boris Johnson has received the boost of passing his first Queen's Speech through the Commons – moments after demanding a general election on 12 December.

Government fears of a defeat on its legislative plans – the first since 1924, if it had happened – melted away, as the Democratic Unionist Party dropped hints it would vote against.

Instead, the Queen’s Speech was approved by 310 votes to 294, although criticism that it is a “charade” is certain to grow with the renewed Downing Street push for a snap election.

The package – likely to be brought back if there is an election and the Conservatives win – is dominated by six other bills to fully implement Brexit, as well as the “paused” withdrawal agreement bill.

Jo Swinson responds to PM's call for early general election

Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson said her party would not back an election until it was clear a no-deal Brexit had been ruled out.

"Boris Johnson is trying to distract from his Government's failure," she said.

"He has missed his do-or-die deadline and is now demanding that Parliament give him a general election and the time to ram through his Bill without proper scrutiny.

"The Liberal Democrats will not support any election until it is clear that we can avoid crashing out with no deal, and that needs an extension from the EU."

Jeremy Corbyn has said he will only back Boris Johnson's offer of a general election when a no-deal Brexit is "off the table".

In an interview, the Labour leader said: "Take no-deal off the table and we absolutely support a general election.

"I've been calling for an election ever since the last one because this country needs one to deal with all the social injustice issues - but no-deal must be taken off the table."
