'We now all need to hold our nerve and deliver Brexit on time' Theresa May says Brexit talks are at 'cruicial stage'

Theresa May was dealt a major blow ahead of a crucial trip to Brussels when three Conservative MPs dramatically quit the party over Brexit.

Pro-European Tories Anna Soubry, Sarah Wollaston and Heidi Allen resigned minutes before prime minister’s questions on Wednesday, citing Ms May’s “disastrous” handling of Brexit as their motivation for joining the new Independent Group.

In an emotional press conference, Ms Allen said the prime minister had been bullied into submission’’ by the European Research Group (ERG) and was “dragging the country and parliament kicking and screaming to the edge of a no deal abyss.’’

She also claimed ministers “at all levels” of government were sympathetic to their project, which saw the 11-strong group reach equal footing in the Commons with the Liberal Democrats and overtake the DUP, who prop up Ms May’s administration.

Meanwhile, Ms May said she held “constructive” talks with European Commission boss Jean-Claude Juncker as she scrambles to secure changes to her Brexit deal. She said that “we have made progress” and that talks would continue “at pace”.

And Labour was plunged into fresh controversy when it suspended ex-Militant member Derek Hatton over an allegedly antisemitic tweet – just two days after he was allowed to rejoin the party.

Theresa May says she never thought she would see the day Labour MPs accuse the party of institutional antisemitism, and leave the party itself.

"Antisemitism has no place whatsoever in any of our political parties," Corbyn says in response. "My own political party takes the strongest action against antisemitism whenever it rears its head."

He then asks the PM what she will be proposing today in Brussels, with just 37 days to go until Brexit.

The PM says she will be taking the concerns over the backstop will be taken to Brussels when she travels there later today for meetings with Jean Claude-Juncker.

Corbyn says people's jobs and livelihoods are in the PM's hands, as he asks her to rule out a no-deal Brexit.

May says they are in the hands of the MPs in the House, and urges MPs to back a deal.

This is very handy from the Press Association on the current make up of the House of Commons - following the splinterring of MPs from both Labour and the Conservatives.

The Independent Group now has 11 MPs in the House of Commons - the same number as the Liberal Democrats, and one more than the DUP.

The resignations of Heidi Allen, Anna Soubry and Sarah Wollaston means the Conservatives now have 314 MPs, three down on the total won at the 2017 general election.

Labour is down 14 on the general election - the eight MPs who have joined the Independent Group, plus six other MPs who were elected as Labour in 2017 but who now sit as independents.

The Government still has a working majority in the House of Commons, thanks to the support of the DUP who have agreed to vote with the Conservatives on key issues including confidence motions and Budgets.

The combined total for the Conservatives and the DUP is 324, while the combined total for all other MPs is 318.

These figures do not include the seven Sinn Fein MPs who were elected at the 2017 general election, but who do not take their seats in the House of Commons. The Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, is also not included.

The state of the parties in the House of Commons is now:

Conservative 314

Labour 248

SNP 35

Lib Dems 11

The Independent Group 11

DUP 10

Plaid Cymru 4

Green 1

Independents 8

Communities Secretary James Brokenshire told Sky News: "I am very saddened and disappointed that obviously this decision has been taken today. I pay tribute to my three former colleagues for all of their work over so many many years. I think the focus has to remain, as the Government is focused, on delivering Brexit.

"This was never going to be easy, seeking to negotiate an arrangement for us to leave after 40 years of membership was always going to underline some real challenges but it is right that we do move forward, that we secure that positive deal and can chart that bright positive force for our country but equally recognising the contribution of my three colleagues who have made a decision to leave today.

"I'm upset. I'm disappointed. The Conservative Party is a broad church and will remain so in offering that positive vision for our country and our future direction."

Mr Corbyn, in his concluding remarks, said: "Little more than a month to go and this Government has failed to put the country first.

"The crisis of jobs going, industries under threat and the prime minister indulges in what her own business minister called fanciful nonsense. When is she going to put the interests of the people of this country before the interests of the Conservative Party?"

May claimed Corbyn has "consistently" put his party political interest ahead of the national interest as she also urged MPs to back her Brexit deal.

"At every stage he has acted to frustrate a deal, he has acted to make no-deal more likely but that's not surprising from this Labour Party.

"What do we see from his Labour Party? Hamas and Hezbollah friends, Israel and the United States enemies, Hatton a hero, Churchill a villain - Attlee and Bevan would be spinning in their grave.

"That's what [he] has done to a once proud Labour Party, we will never let him do it to our country."

According to a new poll by YouGov, The new The Independent Group would enjoy 14% support of the public if it is existed as a political party during a general election - double the amount that would vote for the Liberal Democrats.

But crucially, it would drag Labour down to 26% support and leave the Conservatives cruising ahead with 38%.
