Hillary Clinton said Bill’s affair with intern was 'absolutely not' an abuse of power and people aren’t happy

Almost thirty years on, Hillary Clinton is still answering questions about her husband's presidential affair with Monica Lewinsky.

As an outspoken advocate for women and the #MeToo movement, Hillary’s views on her husband Bill’s affair with Lewinsky, a White House intern, have come under renewed scrutiny.

When questioned about whether the former president’s affair was an abuse of power, Hillary refuted this because the 22 year-old Lewinsky “was an adult”.

This response by Clinton is particularly stunning given that her presidential campaign centred on being an advocate for women.

Asked if her husband should have resigned the presidency after news of the affair broke, Hillary told CBS,:

Absolutely not

Bill was 49 at the time that he had a sexual relationship with Lewinsky.

Hillary then tried to deflect attention away from her husband towards president Trump and the many allegations of sexual misconduct that have been made against him. She said:

Let me ask you this: Where’s the investigation of the current incumbent, against whom numerous allegations have been made and which he dismisses, denies and ridicules?

Referring to her husband, she said:

So there was an investigation, and it — as I believe — came out in the right place.

President Clinton was almost impeached in the nineties for allegedly lying under oath about details of the pair’s relationships.

Clinton’s interview comes as a record-breaking number of women are seeking office in November’s mid-term elections. She cited sexism as a reason for her defeat to Trump in 2016, referencing the investigation into her e-mails and Russian interference.

Twitter users were quick to condemn Clinton’s remarks, which were perceived as disappointing and out of touch by many.
