Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton has hit back at Donald Trump after he made a 'racist' attack on four Democratic congresswomen, in a first-rate clap back.
In a series of tweets sent Sunday morning, Trump said that four Democratic congresswomen of colour should 'go back' to where they came from.
Taking to the social media site, Clinton didn't hold back in her retort to the president. In a tweet, she wrote:
They're from America, and you're right about one thing: Currently their government is a complete and total catastrophe.
In Trump's earlier rant, the president said that four Democratic congresswomen, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley, who came from 'countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe', should 'go back' to the 'broken and crime infested places from which they came.'
All four are women of colour, but only one, Omar, was born outside of the United States. The lawmaker was born in Somalia and emigrated to the United States in the 90s as a child refugee, reports the Huffington Post.
Clinton is a vocal and noted critic of Donald Trump since he defeated her in the 2016 presidential elections. In some of her notable attacks on the president, she's chastised him for spreading 'sexist trash', and accused Trump of conducting 'despicable' acts,
Other social media users loved Clinton's attack, supporting her views.
House speaker Nancy Pelosi also came to her Democratic colleagues' defense Sunday, saying:
When @realDonaldTrump tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to “Make America Great Again” has always been about making America white again. Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power.
I reject @realDonaldTrump's xenophobic comments meant to divide our nation. Rather than attack Members of Congress, he should work with us for humane immigration policy that reflects American values. Stop the raids - #FamiliesBelongTogether!
Despite the widespread attacks on his stance, Trump defended his remarks later in the evening, saying:
Their disgusting language and the many terrible things they say about the United States must not be allowed to go unchallenged.
If the Democrat Party wants to continue to condone such disgraceful behavior, then we look even more forward to seeing you at the ballot box in 2020!
