Emma Watson wore an outfit made out of plastic bottles and people absolutely adore it

Monday night's Met Gala in New York was one of the biggest nights in the fashion calendar, and Emma Watson damn well killed it on the red carpet with a very special outfit.

Watson's Calvin Klein and Eco Age designed off-the-shoulder top and black trousers almost looked like a gown on the stairs. But not only was the outfit beautiful - it's made from 100 per cent recycled materials.

The body is made from three different fabrics woven from yarns made from recycled plastic bottles, Watson said. The zips are recycled, the inner bustier is made from low-impact organic cotton, and the lining is organic silk.

Watson said that she was "proud to say" her clothes were "truly sustainable".

Plastic is one of the biggest pollutants on the planet. Being able to repurpose this waste and incorporate it into my gown for the #MetGala proves the power that creativity, technology and fashion can have by working together.

Each and every part of this beautiful gown has been produced with sustainability in mind, even the components that you can’t see.

In another two-fingers-up to high fashion's customs, Watson is going to rewear or repurpose elements of the gown in future.

I’m looking forward to experimenting with this. Truly beautiful things should be worn again and again and again.

Fellow actors Lupita Nyongo and Margot Robbie also wore dresses designed by Eco Age with sustainable elements incorporated.

Heck: if the media insists on only asking about your clothes, this is one way to give them something important to talk about.
