A petition requesting a bank holiday on the day lockdown measures could be lifted has surpass 30,000 signatures.
Those signing the petition want 21 June to become a special bank holiday to celebrate Boris Johnson’s proposed date to phase out all coronavirus restrictions.
“We’d like the government to create a one-off bank holiday, to be known as Merriweather Day, on Monday June 21st 2021 as an opportunity for families and friends to come together,” wrote the creator of the online petition, David Metcalf.
The UK has been under varying degrees of legal restrictions thanks to the pandemic since March 2020.
21 June marks the earliest date we could be completely free from restrictions, under the roadmap laid out by the prime minister earlier this week.

The government is due to respond to the petition in two days’ time. It will be debate in the House of Commons if it reaches 100,000 signatures.
However, Boris Johnson has changed his mind about easing restrictions before.
A month before Christmas, Boris Johnson agreed let to household mixing happen over five days, despite concerns over growing cases.
With less than week to go, he U-turned and totally banned London and some of the South East from mingling at all.
