Can you work out this old school maths puzzle dividing the internet?

It seems people can’t help but reminisce to days spent sweating their way through a maths class on standard deviation and simultaneous equations.

Ahh the good times.

A ‘simple’ maths equation has resurfaced online:

And once more, people are a little confused.

Dispute seems to be between two answers - 50 and 56:

Here's how we worked it out:

Method 1

7+7=14

14/7=2

2+7=9

9X7=63

63-7=56

With this method, the answer is 56.

This is wrong in some people's eyes, because it doesn't follow the order of operations, or BODMAS.

Method 2

Therefore following the rules of BODMAS, we have to divide, then multiply, and finally add and subtract.

7+(7/7)+(7X7)-7

7+1=8

7X7=49

8+49=57

57-7=50

The answer, according to BODMAS (and the majority of people on Facebook) is 50.
