This couple were given a strange letter on their wedding day nine years ago - then they finally opened it

When Kathy Gunn and her husband were preparing to attend a friend’s wedding, they were torn about what to get the couple as a gift.

Thinking back to their special day, they remembered that the most precious present they received – from Kathy’s great aunt Alison – hadn’t even been opened.

Two letters – one addressed to Mr Gunn, one to Mrs Gunn – along with a wrapped gift. Instructions read:

Do not open until your 1st disagreement.

The couple had had many fights in the span of their nine year marriage - as they are wont to do - but still hadn't opened it.

I honestly think that we both avoided turning to the box, because it would have symbolized our failure. To us, it would have meant that we didn’t have what it takes to make our marriage work – and we’re both too stubborn and determined for that.

So what’s the secret?

Inside the box were two wine glasses a vase and bath products and two letters to the couple:

Brandon:

Go get flowers and a bottle of wine.

Kathy

Go get pizza, shrimp or something you both like. Get a ‘bath’ ready.

Kathy wrote:

For 9 years (and three moves) that box sat high on a shelf in various closets gathering dust, yet it somehow taught us about tolerance, understanding, compromise and patience. Our marriage strengthened as we became best friends, partners, and teammates. Today, we decided to open that box, because I finally had a realisation. I realised that the tools for creating and maintaining a strong, healthy marriage were never within that box – they were within us.
