One person was shot and critically wounded in Ferguson last night despite police attempts to quell protests with a midnight curfew.

Seven people were arrested as protesters defied the curfew and Missouri State Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson confirmed a police car had been shot at.

Reports from the scene said that police had restricted the movements of journalists and that police backtracked on an earlier statement that they were firing harmless smoke bombs - later admitting that tear gas was used to disperse protesters.
