According to figures released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency, university students are achieving twice as many first class degrees compared to a decade ago.

Amid claims that higher education institutions are handing out top grades to boost their rankings, here are the 10 universities where students are most likely to obtain a first (percentage of firsts awarded in brackets):

1. Imperial College (41 per cent)

2. UCL (33 per cent)

3. Surrey (31 per cent)

4. Oxford (31 per cent)

5. Cambridge (29 per cent)

6. Warwick (28 per cent)

7. King's College (27 per cent)

8. St Andrews (27 per cent)

9. Bath (27 per cent)

10. Birmingham (27 per cent)
